A method for coordinating the paths of multiple autonomous vehicles and a vehicle configured to coordinate its path with the path(s) of other vehicles so as to enhance cooperation between the vehicles. The method also enables the vehicles to perform their respective missions more efficiently. The method is applicable to any system in which multiple autonomous vehicles may need to coordinate their paths with each other.

A non-transitory processor-readable medium storing code causes a processor at a first vehicle (e.g. a first autonomous vehicle) to generate a first planned path based on the current position of the first vehicle and the mission requirement assigned to the first vehicle. A first planned path associated with a second vehicle (e.g. a second autonomous vehicle), which is based on the current position of the second vehicle and the mission requirement assigned to the second vehicle, is received at the first vehicle. After the first planned path associated with the second vehicle is received, a second planned path is generated based on the first planned path associated with the second vehicle and at least one of the mission requirements assigned to the first vehicle or the first planned path of the first vehicle. The second planned path of the first vehicle is transmitted to the second vehicle.

Methods and Apparatus for Unmanned Vehicle Command, Control and Communication dated 15 June, 2005.
Methods and apparatus are provided for command and control of an unmanned vehicle (“UV”). A preferred embodiment of the invention includes a Virtual Pilot (“VP”), which includes a Brain and an Arena. The Brain includes rules governing the behavior of the UV and information on missions to be performed. The Arena includes state information about the UV and its environment. UVs in a swarm communicate with each other, as well as with various ground stations, through regular updates. Backup schemes are provided to deal with the failure of a UV module, thereby providing partial degradations in performance. Communication among the UVs and ground stations of a system employ a probabilistic scheme that promotes high-spectral efficiency.

A non-transitory processor-readable medium storing code causes a processor of a first vehicle (e.g. a first autonomous vehicle) to generate a planned path based on its current position and a mission requirement assigned to this first vehicle. A second vehicle (e.g. second autonomous vehicle) generates a planned path based on its current position and assigned mission requirements and transmits this information to the first vehicle. The first vehicle re-generates a planned path based on the information received from the second vehicle taking into account its mission requirements and/or the first planned path generated. This second planned path of the first vehicle is then transmitted to the second vehicle.
